FAQ
What kind of paint do you use? - We use automotive primers and clear coats. For the pretty part we use an acrylic sign enamel. What do you use to make your sculptures? - We use foam and or clay. What kind of foam do you use? - We use a few different kinds of foam. For our large sculptures we use EPS (expanded polystyrene) for smaller more detailed carvings we use a rigid urethane foam called Trymer. Where can I get some Trymer? - We use a 2lb density yellow Trymer that we purchase from: www.shurfitproducts.com Do you use a CNC router table? - Yes, but not often for our sculptures. Our CNC router table is usually reserved for cutting PVC panels. We don't often use the CNC table for carving three dimensional props. In our experience we've learned that unless the three dimensional computer file necessary is already created it's more effective to use a skilled artist.
What tools do you use to sculpt foam? - We use various power tools: grinders, chain saws, sanders, reciprocating saws. Hand tools: saws, rasps, Olfa knives and anything else we can think of to create the look we want. We also use a hot wire table. Of course we can't forget trusty old sandpaper. What kind of coating do you use? - Depends on the finished piece, we have to take into account the finished products end usage. Is it going to be an indoor sign or an outdoor sign? Is the sculpture going to be at a trade show once or is the sculpture going to be installed at ground level in a water park exposed to thousands of people? Would you like the finish to be smooth? After these things have been determined we then pick from a fiberglass, or a polyurethane coating.
